FOREWORD

Prof K Aludia Pillai
August 27, 1996

Madurai Kamraj University has a unique department dealing with Inter Religious Relations. This has facilitated a continuing dialogue and interaction between experts and scholars who have specialised in the study of various religions and teachings of leaders and saints pertaining to those religions.

In 1987, the Guru Nanak Devji Chair was founded with the objective of doing research on the noble ideas of Guru Nanak and other Sikh Gurus in addition to teaching and translating literature relating to Sikh studies. In addition, the Chair also undertakes comparative studies of the Tamil and Sikh heritages.

Under the auspices of the Guru Nanak Devji Chair three seminars were conducted in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and papers presented in these seminars have been published in reputed journals in various parts of the country.

In collaboration with various organisations which are involved in propagating the ideals of Guru Nanak, a lot of literary work has been brought out in Tamil and English by the Chair.

Dr Muthu Mohan, attached to the Guru Nanak Devji Chair, in the collection contained in this volume has brought under the caption “Essays on Sikh Philosophy” a number of papers presented by him in various seminars. The articles deal with the contribution of the Sikh Gurus to world religious thought. This kind of inter-religious dialogue that is going on under the auspices of this Chair will very greatly facilitate a better understanding and harmony among the various religions in India.
