Preface

The knowledge of chronology is very significant for the study of historical events. It facilitates the reader to fix certain events in the time scale for comparative study.

Maharaja Duleep Singh, the King in exile, the subject of this book, was product of Sikh history. He was the last Sikh ruler of the Punjab. It was, therefore, necessary to give the chronology of the main events of Sikh history from Sikh Gurus, Misal period and Maharaja Ranjit Singh to the successors of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Sikh Gurus’ chronology has been given in the Introduction.

In the end, it is my pleasant duty to thank Sardar Gurdev Singh, IAS (retd), President, Institute of Sikh Studies, Dr Kharak Singh, Editor, Abstracts of Sikh Studies, who had very kindly agreed to publish it.

I am grateful to late Maj Gen (Dr) Jaswant Singh, AVSM, who had taken pains to write the Foreword and Dr Kirpal Singh who made some useful suggestions for the improvement of the book.
